Not long after Robert's Rebellion, one Arlan Hawkwood was told of his lineage by his uncle Ser Edmure Hawkwood, Edmure being the Castellan of The Redfort under Lord Waymar Royce, the Redfort being on the border between the Vale and the Riverlands. According to his uncle his bloodline is descended from the Gardener Kings of The Reach and that Arlan was the rightful heir to the throne of Highgarden, not the Tyrells.

Soon after, Arlan founded a company of mercenaries, naming them Hawkwood's Regiment. The Regiment undertook contracts across Westeros, forging a name for themselves as being reliable, trustworthy, and honourable. While Arlan knew he would need an army (The Regiment), he also knew that he would need other means of support so he put his good friend Jonothor Hunter in charge of The Regiment while he pursued his ends elsewhere. Arlan at this point headed to Dorne and a new identity.

In the meantime, Lord Hunter led The Regiment in several campaigns until approximately a third of The Regiment expressed their desire to pursue different aims. That third under Lord Dagon Ironmaker left The Regiment to form their own company, known as The Black Council. At this, Lord Hunter stepped down as leader appointing Lord Weaver as his replacement. Since then The Regiment has gone from strength to strength proving the wisdom of Lord Hunter's decision.

After raising support in Dorne, Arlan headed to The Riverlands and another identity as the merchant Bryan Longriver. As Longriver he set up the Longriver Trade Guild as commercial support to Hawkwood's Regiment, then disappeared once more leaving the Broker Thomas Pettyborn as master of the Longriver Trade Guild while he headed north.

After some months, and several lucrative trade deals, Pettyborn began to notice the signs of economic sabotage. Upon investigation it came to light that the sabotage was being committed by several guilds that were heavily involved with the Tyrells. Knowing he could not win, he converted all assets to ready cash and the members of the Longriver Trade Guild each with a share of said wealth, went their separate ways. Pettyborn then joined Hawkwood's Regiment bringing with him his expertise in trade and his bodyguard -- a mysterious, masked renegade Ironborn.

After a recent hardfought campaign in The Reach, Hawkwood's Regiment gained several new recruits such as the powerful Lord Aiken Drum, the only man to come close to defeating Lord White Eye in a drinking contest (Dothraki Firewater is good stuff) and Lady Lagavulin, the captor of the infamous Ironborn pirate, Jago Halfhorn.
